Harddrive Upgrade of Nomad Zen
Just saw this message on www.nomadness.net describing how to replace the 20GB harddrive that is shipped with the Creative Jukebox Nomad Zen with any other 2.5" harddrive (possibly only the 9mm drives... I have not tried... no need for that just yet).
Now one will just have to wait until the 100GB disks get small enough.
Posted by ludvig at December 18, 2002 03:20 AM | TrackBackyes you can upgrade the HD but there's a 10,000 song limit... so it would be futile
Posted by: zack at February 1, 2003 08:53 PMHmm... that was bad... but OK. I think that still with 2500 songs pr. 10GB you could go as far as 40GB without having problems then. And one could start using 192Kbps MP3 instead of 128Kbps... IF i cared to re-rip all my CDs...
Posted by: ludvig at February 5, 2003 03:14 PMYou can replace the 20GB HD with a 40 GB HD. There are many steps and you have to be VERY careful or you can screw it up for good. So far it's working fine with the "new" HD.

There is no such thing as a 'Nomad harddrive'.
The drives used in the Zen players are regular 2.5" notebook hard drives.
Creative uses the Fujitsu brand, but any model will do.
I've just upgraded mine to 40Gb with no problems.

Posted by: Ralph Heinze at January 2, 2004 04:18 PMI just had the same problem with not starting up and I think im going to have to replace the HD but my Q is does the zen nx take the same HD as all the other zens?
Posted by: Jimbob at January 13, 2004 03:39 PMI've got that same EAX proglem with my Nomad 2Lx, must be some sort of common fault, seems a bit extreme to have to replace the HD to fix it though, any other ideas?
Posted by: hakem at March 25, 2004 01:36 AMYesterday my nomad had the same problem. That's why I stumbeled across this site.
I was able to fix it. Here's what I did:
- enter maintenance menu (press and release the reset switch while holding the Play/Pause button down for a few seconds.)
- select 'clean up'. This will not erase the disc, it will just do a scan disc (playlist will be lost though)
- select 'reboot'
My zen came alive again. Now everything works fine again.

My Nomad Zen has also developed a the same fault as one of the problems mentioned, it will not go past the EAX screen. But after a reorganise and reboot the problem comes back after a few sessions.
Have tried discharging battery, resets, reformat, and OS upgrade, but still failing at same point.
Creative support did not given any indication of problem. Any ideas?
thanx
well hi guys i have a big problem. i have a zen xtra 40gb. well i ran out of space and i went to where Rick said to go and i did it step by step. well i got a 60gb just like the ones they had on there. now i go to reload the OS and i get "harddisk problem" so i put the old 40gb back in and i get the same thing. so i put them both in my laptop...and they work fine. now get this, i put a 30gb and a 6gb in my zen and they work fine!!! well need less to say that i am to the point of ripping my hair out. so i ask all of you to please help me asap i am going to die with out my zen...
I have the same damn problem with my Zen Xtra 40Gb player. I had about 3000 songs on it in 192 bit rate. So needless to say I am pissed. What the hell can I do. I keep getting that harddrive problem message if I try to reload OS. After seeing how you guys have had the same issues, I wish I went iPod. Not that they are any better. But comeon, a 90day warranty, but the repairs won't exceed what you paid for the damn thing. Thinks alot Creative Labs.....Guys, gals, where can I get a replacement HD?
Posted by: Mike at September 16, 2004 08:05 AMThe zen xtra is running a scandisk when it seems to be locked on the EAX screen. If you have a lot of music files, it will take some time to finish. Maybe about 20 minutes for 4000 songs. This event can happen if the battery is removed.
Posted by: Dan at September 22, 2004 07:06 PMMy zen nx goes past the eax screen but is clicking during it. I went to a faq sheet and said if its doing that then just hit the side of it. I did that, no more clicking, but takes forever to load the same screen it had before and still says the same thing if I try to do anything... hard disk problem. Any suggestions other than buy a new hard drive?
